While she didn't go home with "American Idol" title, Kellie Pickler was one of the show's best alumni. Her birth name was Kellie Dawn Pickler, on June 28, 1986 in Stanly Memorial Hospital in Albemarle to Cynthia Morton and Clyde Raymond Pickler. At the time of her pregnancy the mother of her child was only sixteen years old. This was an extremely difficult time for Pickler as her father battled with addiction issues for both drugs and alcohol as her mother divorced her at the age of two. Morton had custody of her for two years. Pickler stated that the situation was getting a bit difficult. "I can remember when my mom as well as me in the kitchen, and I remarked, 'I'd rather God would take me away as I'd prefer to die than be here alongside you.' She took out a knife, placed it on top of the counter and told me, "Here, you do it." I was in the fourth grade. Sure, I'd never be able to take it into consideration, but it's done quite a bit of emotional trauma," she said. Pickler was later given to her grandparents by the court once she turned 12 years old. Morton failed to appear at the hearing. Pickler was brought up by her grandparent's all through her life. Pickler cites them as being the most influential people within her lifetime. The year was January 2002 when her mother Faye Pickler passed away from lung cancer. The family she was raised by was her grandfather. Pickler graduated with a graduation diploma from the North Stanly, located in New London, North Carolina.
